Our Story

Yoga Was the Beginning.

Bhakti began with a deeply personal experience of how movement can change the way someone feels, functions, and lives.

What started as a hot yoga studio in 2010 has grown into something broader: a place where people can build strength, improve mobility and balance, manage stress, deepen their practice, and find practical support for living well over time.

How It Started

A Life-Changing Beginning

In 2010, Ed was recovering from a near-fatal car accident after being rear-ended. The injuries left him unable to continue the pipeline and construction work he had done for years, and surgery was being recommended for his back.

Before moving forward with surgery, a friend suggested that he try Bikram Yoga. Ed began practicing hot yoga daily and found enough relief and improvement that the experience changed the direction of his life.

At the same time, Sandy’s mother was retiring from her career as an executive with Pepsi and had developed a newfound love of hot yoga herself. With both of them experiencing the practice in such a meaningful way, the idea of opening a studio began to take shape.

Bhakti Opens Its Doors

Ed went on to complete Bikram Yoga Teacher Training, and Bhakti opened in 2010.

Sandy, who had been teaching chemistry in New Jersey since 2005, completed Vinyasa teacher training through the Barkan Method just two months after the studio opened.

From the beginning, Bhakti was built around a simple belief: movement can be powerful, transformative, and deeply personal.

How Bhakti Grew

More Than a Studio

Over time, Bhakti grew not only through classes, but through teaching, community, and years of working closely with students at many different stages of life.

2010

Bhakti Begins

Hot yoga became the foundation of the studio and remains one of Bhakti’s original passions.

2013

Teacher Training Begins

Bhakti expanded into yoga teacher training, helping many teachers deepen their practice and learn to share yoga with others.

Today

Bhakti Yoga & Wellness

The studio continues to honor its yoga roots while offering more ways to support strength, mobility, balance, recovery, and lifelong well-being.

Hot yoga is where Bhakti began, and it remains at the heart of who we are. What has changed is our understanding of how many different kinds of support people may need to stay active and well throughout life.

What Years of Teaching Taught Us

People Need More Than One Way to Move.

Over many years of working with yoga students, we began noticing something again and again. People wanted to stay active and continue doing the things they loved, but injuries, health challenges, changing bodies, and physical limitations were sometimes making that harder.

We did not see that as a reason for people to stop moving. We saw it as a reason to create more ways for them to move.

That realization became an important part of Bhakti’s evolution. Alongside hot and warm yoga, we began thinking more broadly about strength, balance, mobility, recovery, confidence, and the skills people need to keep participating fully in their lives.

The Next Chapter

How Bhakti Balance™ Was Born

Bhakti Balance™ grew directly from what we had learned from our students.

We wanted to create a non-heated practice that could help people build practical strength, improve balance and stability, maintain mobility and flexibility, and feel more confident in everyday movement.

Rather than replacing yoga, Bhakti Balance™ expands the ways we can support people whose needs extend beyond a traditional yoga class.

The Goal Is Lifelong Movement

We want people to have the strength, mobility, balance, and confidence to keep doing the things that matter to them for as long as possible.

That may mean practicing hot yoga, building functional strength, improving balance, learning to move more comfortably, managing stress, or combining several approaches over time.

Bhakti Today

Rooted in Yoga. Growing With Our Community.

We Still Love Hot Yoga

Hot yoga is not being replaced. It remains a central part of Bhakti, both because of where our story began and because of the strength, focus, discipline, flexibility, and sense of accomplishment it can offer.

We Also Know Needs Change

A person’s body, goals, schedule, health, and abilities can change over time. Bhakti is growing so students can find different forms of support without feeling they have outgrown the community they already know.

We Look at the Whole Person

Movement is only one part of wellness. Strength, mobility, stress, nutrition, recovery, habits, mindset, and overall quality of life all influence how someone feels day to day.

We Want People to Keep Living Fully

The goal is not perfection. It is helping people remain active, capable, confident, and engaged in the lives they want to live.

The People Behind Bhakti

Meet Sandy & Ed

Bhakti has always been personal for us. We did not begin with a business concept and then choose yoga. Yoga became part of our lives first, and the studio grew from that experience.

Over the years, teaching thousands of classes, training teachers, and working closely with students has shaped how we think about movement and wellness.

We continue to learn, evolve, and broaden what Bhakti offers while staying connected to the practices and community that started it all.

Experience With a Purpose

Our backgrounds include yoga, functional movement, health coaching, nutrition, Ayurveda, wellness education, and years of hands-on teaching experience.

We bring those perspectives together with one goal: helping people find realistic ways to move better, feel stronger, and support their health over the long term.

Why Bhakti

More Than a Place to Work Out

Bhakti has always been about more than completing a class. It is about learning your body, building confidence, challenging yourself when appropriate, slowing down when needed, and finding practices that support you through different seasons of life.

Some people come for hot yoga. Some come for strength or balance. Some are looking for stress relief, community, mobility, or a way to begin again after time away from movement.

There is room for all of those starting points here.

Your Path Does Not Have to Look Like Anyone Else’s.

Whether you are brand new, returning after time away, continuing a long-standing yoga practice, or looking for new ways to stay strong and active, Bhakti gives you a place to begin and room to grow.
